Green and cost efficient heating systems

Early 2009 came as a bit shock for many people. The global recession kicked in with a gusto, and it came straight off the back of a hike in oil, electricity and gas prices. Financially crippling, the only saving to grace to have come out of this dreadful time, is that it has prompted many people to search out Green and cost efficient heating systems. Today, and indeed in the future, it is estimated that this common trend towards saving energy and controlling heating and energy consumption, in a cost effective and eco-friendly way, is sure to continue to grow stronger. As the government continues to wage war on carbon consumption and taxes are placed upon carbon foot prints, this will further encourage people to look towards more effective heating systems.

One of the most effective ways to heat your home, is with underfloor heating. Underfloor heating has the advantage of meeting the dual objective of being both eco-friendly and cost effective. Whereas heaters or radiators (wall mounted) allow heat to rise, and heat a room from ceiling, downwards. Underfloor heating makes the floor the source of the heat, and thus heats the room from bottom up. Since we all spend our time at ground level (and not dancing on the ceiling) this means that the space we actually occupy is the warmest, and as such we have effectively and efficiently heated our rooms!

Underfloor heating can either be electrical or boiler based (i.e. water). Water heated underfloor heating is estimated to run at two degrees less that conventional radiator wall mounted based heaters. As such you should notice a decrease in utility bills, thus saving money. By reducing your energy requirements you are also reducing your energy consumption and ultimately reducing your carbon emissions and carbon foot print, providing yourself with an eco-friendly green, cost effective heating system.

As the recession takes its toll on the housing market, people are finding themselves in positions whereby they have to rent accommodation. If you are planning on renting out your house, or indeed you are moving into rented accommodation, you should, where possible, consider a property with underfloor heating, in a bid to save money on fuel bills.

Underfloor heating need not be complicated or expensive to fit. Fitting underfloor heating to a rented property will require a damp proof membrane to cover the sub floor, followed by insulation boards, for example Marmox insulation boards, then you would lay the heating mats (if that was your method), then lay laminate or wood on top. Check with at least three local companies to ensure your range of quotes all coincide with one another. Companies will stock all the components you will need if you are going to install underfloor heating yourself. Remember though, if you are going to rent the property out to tenants, as a landlord you are bound by strict health, safety and building regulations.
